• Sergio Aguero has the most hat tricks in Premier League history with 12

  • There are 14 players with five or more hat tricks in the Premier League era

  • Read below for our list of the players with the most PL hat tricks

It’s no coincidence that those who featured at the summit of top scorer Premier League odds also tended to score the most hat tricks.

There are, however, some players who have more hat tricks than we might expect.

While there are forwards who are prone to purple patches, others are more consistent, meaning fewer hat tricks but plenty of goals overall.

A place in the 100 Club doesn’t guarantee a spot on this list of the most Premier League hat tricks. Here’s every Premier League player with five or more hat tricks.

Ian Wright – 5

Plenty of Ian Wright’s career was before the Premier League era, but the much-loved pundit still had time to squeeze in five hat tricks.

Wright scored his final top flight three-piece in September 1997. His first two arrived just like London buses – Wright notched a hat trick as Arsenal hammered Ipswich on March 5th 1994, and took the match ball home again 14 days latter when the Gunners saw off Southampton.

Raheem Sterling – 5

Booking his place in this group with a hat trick in February 2022, Raheem Sterling continues to climb the list of players with the most Premier League goals.

It’s clear the former Liverpool forward is going to have doubters regardless of what he achieves on the field. That shouldn’t detract from what an impressive Premier League CV he’s putting together.

Robin van Persie – 5

All five of Robin van Persie’s Premier League hat tricks were scored across a two-and-a-half-year period. Three of which were for Arsenal, including a treble away to Chelsea.

Most memorable of them all, though, was van Persie’s heroics in Manchester United’s 3-2 win against Southampton in September 2012.

Ruud van Nistelrooy – 5

Dutch poacher Ruud van Nistelrooy scored five Premier League hat tricks between December 2001 and September 2003.

Lethal for Manchester United, van Nistelrooy scored 95 Premier League goals in 150 appearances before departing for Real Madrid.

Andy Cole – 5

It’s a long while since Andy Cole was a major factor in football bet tips. Perhaps that why he’s sometimes forgotten about.

Cole is third all-time in Premier League goals and scored his five hat tricks across a six-year span, the first two coming in the black and white of Newcastle and the final three in the red of Manchester United.

Dimitar Berbatov – 5

While not the most prolific, Dimitar Berbatov was undoubtedly the most elegant player in this group.

The first of his five hat tricks came in a 6-4 thriller against Reading in his Tottenham days, and he scored three for Manchester United in a sensational purple patch in 2010-11.

Luis Suarez – 6

Scorer of three hat tricks in a calendar year from April 2012, Luis Suarez also owns a hat-trick related record for being the first Premier League player to score three trebles against the same team.

Norwich were sick of the sight of Suarez by the time he signed for Barcelona.

Wayne Rooney – 7

Second to only Alan Shearer in Premier League goals, it was longevity rather than purple patches that earned Wayne Rooney’s place here.

Over a decade separated Rooney’s first and last Premier League hat tricks. He was so much more than a goal scorer, but his tally of seven is bettered by just six players in league history.

Michael Owen – 8

From teenage phenom to Ballon d’Or winner, Michael Owen was one of the most lethal finishers in world football during his Liverpool stint.

It’s no surprise that seven of the eight hat tricks in his Premier League career came for the Merseyside club. His last three-piece was in the black and white of Newcastle in 2005.

Harry Kane – 8

With years to go as a star of Premier League predictions, Harry Kane is likely to climb this list and could easily finish in top spot. It’s possible Kane passes Alan Shearer’s magic 260 mark, too.

Kane’s first Premier League hat trick was back in 2015. His best spell saw him notch four in a period of just over five months in 2017. He then scored back-to-back hat tricks in December of the same year.

Thierry Henry – 8

Thierry Henry’s first was in 2000. He had to wait until 2003 for a second. His remaining six came between April 2004 and May 2006.

Not only seventh all-time in Premier League goals scored, Henry scored 0.68 goals per game, a figure which was helped out by his hat-trick laden spell in the mid-2000s.

Robbie Fowler – 9

When it comes to the most natural goal scorers in the history of the Premier League, there’s a pretty strong case for Robbie Fowler.

Fowler had the quickest hat-trick until Sadio Mane broke his record, and his tally of three perfect hat tricks is more than anyone else. He made goal scoring look so easy – his peak wasn’t as long as some others, but at his best, he was a joy to watch.

Alan Shearer – 11

Good luck finding a Premier League goal scoring record which doesn’t involve Alan Shearer. The Newcastle legend scored his first PL hat trick for Blackburn back in 1993.

In fact, his first 10 were all for the Lancashire club. Despite netting 148 Premier League goals for Newcastle, Shearer curiously had just one hat-trick, which came in an 8-0 drubbing of Sheffield Wednesday.

Sergio Aguero – 12

The king of the Premier League hat trick, Sergio Aguero has the second-best goals per game ratio of Premier League players with 100 goals.

He was as clinical as they come, his first Premier League hat trick being recorded just weeks after signing for Manchester City.

The Argentine is also one of just five players in Premier League history to score five times in the same match. He did so against Newcastle back in 2015, the first goal scored in the 42nd minute and the fifth following just after the hour mark.
