The moment of the decision is about to arrive, it is very close. It is now a matter of weeks, Paul Pogba will soon choose his future after a period of reflection that has lasted since last summer.

The current deal with Manchester United runs out in June and the strategy is very clear: Pogba will wait until May for a final decision, he's not in a hurry because this choice will be decisive in his career.

Fabrizio Romano articles

It is no coincidence that Paul has been repeating in public for months that he wants to win trophies, waiting for a turning point after so many complicated seasons in Manchester.

And his agent Mino Raiola has adopted a plan similar to the one he used a year ago with Gianluigi Donnarumma when his contract with AC Milan was about to expire: wait until the right moment, don't sign with any club during the season but choose when the plan for all the clubs for the next season is already clear and defined.

The same will happen with Pogba, pending the final decision which will depend on many factors.

This Pogba saga started last July: Manchester United during last summer, in the first week of July, made a proposal to Paul Pogba to extend the contract.

But the negotiation never entered the final stages because the club's project was still unclear and Pogba together with his agent Mino Raiola preferred to wait.

The same process happened for example with Bruno Fernandes, a negotiation that began in July 2021 and is now ready for signings on the new deal until 2027.

It took 8 months to reach an agreement for the Portuguese midfielder, while Pogba is still thinking about it and wants to understand what the club's plan will be before communicating his final decision.

This involves the next Man Utd manager who will replace Ralf Rangnick but also the club's expectations, future planning, ambitions that become decisive for a player like Pogba who will turn 30 in March 2023.

It is not a financial or salary-related choice: if he had wanted to choose the money, Pogba would have already been able to sign for several clubs that have approached him for months by offering high potential salaries and signing fees.

Paul makes it a personal, professional and even family matter: after so many years in Manchester, is it time to change club and try a new experience? Leaving England or staying in the same country?

Paul Pogba

So many factors that Pogba is evaluating with his family, he will take his time but he wants maximum clarity on the Manchester United project before making a final choice.

He has never had particular problems with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer despite some rumors, he has always had respect for the manager like now for Rangnick but he pretends to understand what Manchester United will be like before he can give a final answer.

Clearly, Paul Pogba's choice will affect Manchester United's transfer market in the coming months.

Regardless of the Frenchman's decision, a defensive midfielder will arrive because the club has been looking for a player in that position for months now, with Declan Rice top of the list but really complicated signing because West Ham don't want to give any discount for their star.

But in the case of Paul Pogba's departure, Man United will also consider the arrival of a more offensive and quality midfielder during the summer transfer market.

The other priorities concern the center-back, the expectation is to buy a new player in that position while waiting for the choice of the new manager; in addition, Manchester United are exploring the striker market.

A new player will arrive in that position in the summer after a complicated season, Ralf Rangnick has already been involved by the board in discussions for a striker who could represent the type of number 9 needed by Man United.

The process has started for weeks but will only be completed after further comparison in the coming months.

A necessary decision also because Edinson Cavani has decided not to stay at Manchester United and there will not be a new deal for him, the desire of the Uruguayan forward is to try an experience in Spain and therefore he will say goodbye to the club in the summer.

Jesse Lingard is also destined to leave Man United on a free transfer because his contract will not be extended, he wanted to move to Newcastle last January but the club had prevented him from doing so.

There will therefore be many changes in Manchester United version 2022/2023, waiting for the final choice of Paul Pogba who will change some strategies for the club when there will be the communication of the Frenchman and his agent Raiola.

For now, it's a work in progress.

The QIPCO 2000 Guineas attracts the best UK, Irish and French three-year old milers around, not only for the ample prize money, but for the Classic status of the race itself.

The Group One race is run over a distance of one mile on Newmarket’s Rowley Mile course on the opening day of the two-day Newmarket Guineas Festival.

While the 2000 Guineas is open to colts and fillies, usually only colts contest it as fillies find it difficult against the boys and they have their own same sex race the day after anyway.

Some horses are aimed at this race as part of a three pronged assault on the season long Triple Crown, which consists of the Guineas, Derby and St Leger.

It goes without saying that you need an exceptional horse to pick up all three races and you won’t be surprised to discover that Nijinsky was the last Triple Crown winner back in 1970 – that’s now some 52 years ago!

He was the NAP of the day in almost all of the daily newspapers too.

Notable winners of the 2000 Guineas include Camelot (2012), Frankel (2011), Sea The Stars (2009), Henrythenavigator (2008), Rock Of Gibraltar (2002), King Of Kings (1998), Zafonic (1993), Nashwan (1989), Dancing Brave (1986), El Gran Senor (1984), Wollow (1976), Brigadier Gerard (1971), Nijinsky (1970), Sir Ivor (1968) and Tudor Minstrel (1947).

Well known jockeys to win the 2000 Guineas include Gordon Richards, Scobie Breasley, Edgar Britt, Lester Piggott, George Moore, Ron Hutchinson, Willie Carson, Steve Cauthen, Pat Eddery, Kieren Fallon, Frankie Dettori and Ryan Moore.

Last years’ QIPCO 2000 Guineas was won by Poetic Flare (16/1) from Master Of The Seas (6/1) and Lucky Vega (12/1)

The top three quickest times for the Newmarket 2000 Guineas over the last 20 renewals are:

  • 2020 - Kameko (1:34.72)
  • 2007 - Cockney Rebel (1:35.28)
  • 2021 - Poetic Flare (1:35.69)

2000 Guineas Winners

  • 2017 - Churchill (Ryan Moore / Aidan O'Brien) Time: 01:36.6
  • 2016 - Galileo Gold (Frankie Dettori /  Hugo Palmer) Time: 01:35.9

The only other trainer to have recorded multiple winners of the 2000 Guineas is Jim Bolger with two winners (2013 Dawn Approach, 2021 Poetic Flare).

On the cold list is Saeed bin Suroor who has saddled a total of 19 runners in the race without registering a single victory.

The two leading jockeys in the 2000 Guineas over the last 20 years are Ryan Moore and Kevin Manning who have both won the a couple of times each.

Ryan Moore’s winners have been with Gleneagles (2015) & Churchill (2017) while Kevin Manning winners have been with Dawn Approach (2013) & Poetic Flare (2021).

QIPCO 2000 Guineas Trial Races

The 2000 Guineas is now served by several trial races, including the Craven Stakes at Newmarket and the Greenham Stakes at Newbury, while the 2000 Guineas itself is a trial for the Derby at Epsom.

The last horse to win both the 2000 Guineas and the Derby in the same regular season was Camelot (Aidan O’Brien) in 2012.

For some additional in-depth insight into some of the Guineas trial races, be sure to check out some the excellent horse racing blogs that are out there.

Starting Prices

Just four favourites have obliged in the last ten years at odds of 15/8, 11/8, 4/1 and 6/4.

There was only one major shock in that time when in 2014, Night Of Thunder dumbfounded punters by scoring at odds of 40/1 in the betting for Kieron Fallon.

    • Wayne Rooney is Manchester United’s all-time leading scorer ahead of Bobby Charlton

    • The record changed hands several times prior to Charlton’s career

    • Read below for the leading scorers in Manchester United’s history

Looking through the history of Manchester United top scorers is a who’s who of the sport’s greatest players.

    Bet Calculator

Cristiano Ronaldo, Eric Cantona and Ruud van Nistelrooy feature on a season-by-season basis, but our focus here is on the club’s all time leading scorers.

    Paul Scholes – 155 goals

The latter years of Paul Scholes’ career were spent in a deeper midfield role, but the former Oldham manager was renowned for his goal scoring earlier in his career.

Never afraid to shoot from distance and with a knack for arriving in the area at the right time, Scholes had a run of four consecutive seasons in double figures around the turn of the century.

His most productive season was 20 goals in 2002-03 followed by 14 in the next campaign. Goals were loss common from 2005 onwards, though Scholes continued to add to his tally, earning the 10th spot on this list.

The club is still searching for its next Scholes to build a midfield around as they look to become a Premier League winner betting favourite once again.

    Mark Hughes – 163 goals

Mark Hughes had two spells at Old Trafford, separated by brief stints with Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

Amassing over 450 appearances for the club, the Welshman wasn’t particularly prolific by modern standards, yet he was an important player for the Red Devils as they won two league titles and three FA Cups.

The club’s top scorer on six occasions, Hughes might not have been blessed with the same ability as Eric Cantona or Robin van Persie, but he was still a vital piece of some successful United sides.

    Joe Spence – 168 goals

Playing his final match for Manchester United in 1933, Joe Spence was a feature during a difficult period in the club’s history between the wars. Spence was miles clear of the previous record holder with his tally of 168.

Jack Rowley eventually knocked Spence off top spot. By 1960, he was third on the club’s all-time scoring charts. All of the players above him have a better goals-per-game ratio aside from Bobby Charlton, who also sits at 0.33.

    Ryan Giggs – 168 goals

With 963 appearances, Ryan Giggs is over 200 ahead of anyone else. It is perhaps unsurprising that he makes the top 10 given the sheer number of matches he played in.

Across the most decorated career in the history of English football, Giggs had just five seasons where he broke the 10-goal mark. His career-high was 17 in 1993-94 and he never got above eight over the last decade of his playing career.

    George Best – 179 goals

A man who needs no explanation. Many would still name George Best as Manchester United’s greatest ever player almost half a century after he played his final game for the club.

Best was a wizard on the field, mesmeric in his dribbling and capable of things others can only concoct in their head. Off the field, he was an icon of a generation, a symbol of an evolving British culture.

The 179 goals in 480 Manchester United appearances tells just a small portion of the George Best story.

    Dennis Viollet – 179 goals

Top scoring for the club three times in the 1950s, Dennis Viollet has the best goals-per-game ratio of anyone on this list.

A survivor of the Munich air disaster and one of the Busby Babes, Viollet played for the Red Devils between 1953 and 1962, when he was surprisingly sold to Stoke City for a fee of £250,000.

He departed having won two league titles with United and had put together six seasons of 20 or more goals.

    Jack Rowley – 211 goals

Surpassing Joe Spence by a comfortable margin, Jack Rowley still didn’t hold the record for that long thanks to Denis Law’s emergence in the following years.

Nicknamed ‘The Gunner’, Rowley’s CV isn’t as littered with silverware as others here, but he was always a factor when making a football prediction.

He scored 109 goals across four seasons between 1946 and 1950 and found the net six times in his six England caps. Rowley top scored for United in five seasons before departing for Plymouth Argyle in 1954.

    Denis Law – 237 goals

The only Scot to win the Ballon d’Or, Denis Law was one of the best players on the planet throughout the 1960s.

Scoring 163 goals across his first five campaigns with Manchester United, Law won two league titles, a European Cup and FA Cup with the Red Devils before returning to Manchester City in 1973.

Of the 10 top scorers in United history, only Viollet got his goals at a better rate than Law, who finished with an average of 0.59 per contest.

    Bobby Charlton – 249 goals

The leader in Manchester United appearances until Ryan Giggs knocked him off top spot, Bobby Charlton played for the club between 1956 and 1973, taking him to a tally north of 750.

He won a Ballon d’Or in light of England’s World Cup win and collected club honours aplenty, including three league titles.

Charlton, like many of the greats, was so much more than a pure goal scorer. Capable of being playmaker, midfield general or a finisher, he had two further runners up placings in Ballon d’Or voting.

    Wayne Rooney – 253 goals

Undeniably one of the best Premier League strikers of all-time, Wayne Rooney overtook Bobby Charlton on 21st January 2017 with a goal in a 1-1 draw with Stoke.

Unfairly maligned throughout his career and ultimately underrated at points, Rooney was integral through periods of dominance in Premier League predictions.

From the hat-trick against Fenerbahce to an overhead in the Manchester derby and accepting different roles for the benefit of the team, Rooney had the peak brilliance and longevity to match.

The record books reflect well on his career with club and country.
