The Premier League title race has been done and dusted for some time now but the fight for the top four is still very much alive.

With just six points separating third-placed Chelsea and seventh-placed Sheffield United, the Champions League qualification battle has taken centre stage.

At the time of writing, all five clubs have three games left to play. Every match is crucial and we could see a shock or two in the Premier League betting odds in the coming weeks.

With a bit of luck, neutrals could be set for a ‘winner takes all’ double header on the final day of the season.

Who Qualifies For The Champions League?

Football fans will be keeping a close eye on the latest injury news, online betting tips and more ahead of each Premier League fixture.

The games are coming thick and fast so be sure to familiarise yourself with the English football schedule ahead of what should be an exciting end to the campaign.

Without further ado, it is time to take a look at all five teams as we enter the business end of the season.

Who can hold their nerve? Can Wolves or Sheffield United pip the big boys to fourth spot? Only time will tell but one thing is for sure: this IS the most exciting top four fight in Premier League history.

Chelsea

Currently third in the table, Chelsea are in the driving seat to secure Champions League qualification.

A home clash with relegated Norwich City should mean an easy three points for Frank Lampard’s side, which will pile more pressure on the chasing pack.

However, Chelsea must go to Anfield and try to get a result.

Liverpool have picked up 52 points from a possible 54 at home this season and they are still on track to top the 100 points mark.

If their Champions League status is still up in the air by July 22nd, a final day football betting classic with Wolves awaits.

With so much potentially at stake for both clubs, that could be an absolute humdinger at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea Fixtures:

  • 14th July: vs Norwich City

  • 22nd July: at Liverpool

  • 26th July: vs Wolves

Leicester City

Brendan Rodgers’ side looked like top four betting certainties a few months ago but the Foxes are in real danger of dropping out of the Champions League places.

Victory against Sheffield United on Thursday is an absolute must.

Tottenham have been hit and miss this season and Leicester fans will be hoping that they have an off day on July 19th.

However, the north London outfit are looking to claim a Europa League berth and Jose Mourinho’s men will be tough to beat.

A final day decider against Manchester United looks likely.

One of those teams could go into that contest knowing that a draw will be enough to qualify for the Champions League but we could be treated to a real blood, sweat and tears football match.

Leicester Fixtures:

  • 16th July: vs Sheffield United

  • 19th July: at Tottenham Hotspur

  • 26th July: vs Man United

Manchester United

Southampton’s injury time equaliser on Monday night threw a huge spanner in the works at Old Trafford.

Manchester United are unbeaten in 18 matches in all competitions but that 2-2 draw felt like a defeat given the circumstances.

Crystal Palace have failed to inspire confidence since the Premier League returned and West Ham may find themselves guilty of taking their foot off the gas now their top flight status is more or less guaranteed.

However, nothing is ever a given in England’s elite club competition.

If United win their next two games, the Red Devils will travel to the King Power Stadium as the Premier League’s form side.

Well fancied in outright winner odds for next season, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men can send out a statement of intent in the coming weeks.

Man United Fixtures:

  • 16th July: at Crystal Palace

  • 22nd July: vs West Ham

  • 26th July: at Leicester

Wolverhampton Wanderers

Credit where credit is due – Wolves just keep on finding more.

Despite starting the 2019/20 season back in July last year, the Molineux club are still battling to finish in the top four while Europa League glory is not out of the question.

Wolves were excellent value for their convincing victory over Everton at the weekend and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see Nuno Espirito Santo’s side make light work of Burnley and Crystal Palace later this week.

Do that and Wolves might just have a chance of sneaking into the top four with a win on the final day.

They are relying on the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United to drop points but with the pressure gauge increasing by a few notches, you never know…

Wolves Fixtures:

  • 15th July: at Burnley

  • 20th July: vs Crystal Palace

  • 26th July: at Chelsea

Sheffield United

Sheffield United will need a minor miracle to sneak into the top four but stranger things have happened.

Chris Wilder has done a terrific job at Bramall Lane this season and the Blades were much the better side when beating Chelsea 3-0 at the weekend.

Victory for Sheffield United at Leicester on Thursday evening will give the Blades renewed hope of nicking a top four berth.

With Everton struggling right now, Wilder’s side will be favourites with 888sport to secure three points back on home turf.

And with a win over Southampton on the final day, who knows? All Sheffield United can do at this moment in time is win their three matches and hope for a crazy run of results.

And in this unprecedented Premier League campaign, it seems anything is possible.

  • 16th July: at Leicester

  • 20th July: vs Everton

  • 26th July: at Southampton

Once again, Lewis Hamilton is on the cusp of history. It is impossible to talk about the 2020 Formula One season without making note of the fact that Hamilton is one title away from equalling Michael Schumacher.

Hamilton stands alone on six, one behind Schumacher, one ahead of Juan Manuel Fangio. Mercedes are the F1 betting online favourites for a season that began with no knowledge of when it will end.

It is a season unlike before, tracks being competed on twice, and all under the cloud of uncertainty that plans could be derailed by the pandemic that has shaken the world.

Two races into the 2020 campaign, Mercedes are streets ahead – just as they were in the opening races of last season.

Ferrari have gone from serious challengers to a midfield also-ran. Max Verstappen drove well in race two, but his car let him down on the opening weekend, leaving him with an early deficit to Hamilton.

Speaking of deficits, Hamilton (thanks to a penalty in race one) is trailing his teammate Valtteri Bottas after two races despite a faultless performance in race two to take pole and the victory.

The shortened, and unknown length, season makes any gap more significant. Simply put, with only eight races confirmed when the season started, drivers have a lot less time to make up for a DNF or a disappointing finish.

Two races have since been added, in Italy and Russia, and more are expected to come, but the urgency to pick up as many points as possible is obviously greater.

Races are coming thick and fast. There are opportunities aplenty of in-play betting, but teams have limited time to work on and test upgrades.

A practice session was lost last weekend, and this weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix will make it three race weekends on the bounce.

That should play in Hamilton’s favour. Mercedes are once again clear of the rest of the grid in early season pace – the limited time to work on upgrades, address reliability issues, makes it harder for teams to close the gap.

The Silver Arrows claimed the car was ‘critical’ in race one. Mechanical issues are oft-heard on team radio, Hamilton needs to be wary of X or Y, and messages along those lines, but reliability has been an integral pillar of their complete dominance of the sport over the best part of the last decade.

Sure, Hamilton will feel he dropped points in the opening race.

Of course, accidents can happen and Bottas can build a lead in the championship, but the Mercedes seldom fail to finish a race – Hamilton recently broke his own record for consecutive points finishes.

The six-time world champion, as that phrase shows, is a master of consistency. Hamilton strings together lap after near-perfect lap, he goes race upon race without a notable error.

This is what has made him one of Formula One’s greatest ever drivers, what has made him near enough unbeatable in recent years.

Given the expectation of Mercedes each year, the disrupted season can hardly help Hamilton.

Less time between races, changes to how the race weekend works, should add an element of randomness, and that’s never going to be a good thing for a team as far clear as the Silver Arrows.

Bottas, who will almost certainly be Hamilton’s closest challenger, started strongly last season before falling off the pace. The Finn, in a much happier place after going through a turbulent period in his personal life, might stage more of a sustained challenge.

A veteran at challenging for titles, Hamilton has the experience of fighting over almost an entire calendar year to win.

Reducing that to a shorter period could work in the favour of the less experienced Bottas, an unquestionably talented driver who faces great external pressure to prove he can keep up with Hamilton and pressure he will have put on himself to become a world champion.

At 3/1, Bottas is the second favourite in 888sport’s Formula One betting odds.

Before the season started, a shorter campaign looked less favourable to Mercedes than it does now.

Ferrari were expected to be much quicker, and until racing had properly started, no one knew for sure what sort of pace teams were going to be at.

Although Verstappen’s Red Bull will win races and push the Mercedes hard, it already looks a straight shootout between Hamilton and Bottas.

We could dive deep into the tracks that are on the calendar and how Mercedes have done at each of them. The truth is, though, Mercedes have been competitive in pretty much every race over the last few years.

They prefer some tracks to others, but with the advantage they have over the field, they will be expecting/expected to win every weekend.

Hamilton is the overwhelming favourite to make it seven later this year. The format as it stands, and considering he holds a championship lead, slightly increases Bottas’ chances, but few will be picking the Finn over his teammate at this stage.

For any team or individual that dominates in a sport like Mercedes and Hamilton have, it’s difficult to envisage how they stop winning.

That is the case for Mercedes and Hamilton – they show no sign of slowing down.

The Euro 2020 Final was due to take place on July 12th. With the tournament delayed until 2021, it’s a long wait for the fans and players who spent months, or even years, looking forward to a summer of international tournament football once again.

For some teams, it will be a welcome chance to develop players and recover from injuries. Others will see it as a missed opportunity, a time when their key men will age.

Euro 2020 Key Points:

England are one of the football betting favourites. Gareth Southgate’s team were brilliant in qualifying (only Belgium scored more goals), backing up an excellent World Cup in 2018 and some superb performances in the Nations League.

A lot can change in a year, but England have an embarrassment of riches across the squad ahead of the Euros next summer.

Depth Of Talent

If the Euros had taken place this summer, England already had a talented young squad. Southgate had depth in most positions, players in form and world-beating talents in Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jadon Sancho and Raheem Sterling.

The year of football could see fresh talents flourish. Phil Foden and Mason Greenwood are making their mark in Manchester.

Bukayo Saka has just been handed a well-deserved big contract with Arsenal. Mason Mount is developing as an all-round midfield player under Frank Lampard at Chelsea.

There are potentially more to come, too. Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ruben Loftus-Cheek are on their way back from major injuries, but Southgate clearly rates the pair.

Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones and Neco Williams should get minutes for Liverpool in 2020/21. Tariq Lamptey has made a great impression for Brighton.

To call this a new generation would be unfair on Alexander-Arnold and Sancho. They are established among the elite and they are younger than some of the aforementioned up-and-comers.

What it shows, when we glance down the recent England squad lists, is the age profile of this England squad, the group of players Southgate has trusted, is at no risk of decline with an extra year to wait for tournament.

A significant chunk will not hit their supposed peak until the 2022 World Cup or beyond.

Sure, it’ll prove frustrating for some. Players who seemed a lock will miss out on the squad. For England and Southgate, though, it gives time to players who are already impressing in senior football.

It would be dishonest to pretend this is a squad without weakness. Jordan Pickford is under pressure for the number one spot. Deep-lying midfield is a concern and the options at centre-back are not as impressive as elsewhere on the pitch.

Some players not mentioned here could break through in the next 12 months. Some seemingly on course for stardom may stall.

What England have is not dependent on a single player becoming a star, and that’s what’s so important.

For as exciting as these starlets are individually, England have enough quality (in most positions, at least) to not be reliant on Foden becoming Andres Iniesta or Greenwood turning into peak Robin van Persie before next summer.

Injury Boost

Heading towards what was meant to be the highlight of the summer for football fans across Europe, England were facing uncertainty about the fitness of Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford.

With both sidelined for a long period, it was unclear when they would come back and how much match fitness they could build up before the tournament got underway.

Rashford was unlikely to start, but as the first forward off the bench, he would be a big loss.

Kane, still arguably the best striker in the Premier League and England’s captain, might be England’s most important player despite his injury issues and relative drop off in production.

Going into a tournament without Kane would have seriously hurt England’s chances.

Others were likely carrying knocks from an arduous season. A prolonged, enforced break, which lockdown imposed, is alien to elite athletes. It will have helped many.

With a year to go until Euro 2021, the chance to recuperate and recover might prove to be meaningless. There are a lot of matches to be played between now and a potential appearance in the final for England.

Players will get injured, and fatigue will build up. England can hope that no player as talismanic as Kane suffers a long-term injury.

It’s worth noting too that England, of course, are not the only team to benefit from this. France will hope to have a fully fit Paul Pogba. The same goes for Belgium and Eden Hazard.

There were superstars who were unlikely to be at their best for Euro 2020. Hopefully the delay means the majority of Europe’s best will be ready to take centre stage.

Time To Dream

Being an England fan is about hope. It’s about expectation, pressure. Overhyping young players is a staple of the English sports media.

There is such a desire for success – the country wants to find the next Paul Gascoigne, the next Bobby Charlton.

A jog through old articles can find optimistic pieces about a ‘new generation’, looking at Steven Taylor, Michael Johnson, Danny Welbeck and others as the future of the England team.

At their time, each of those players looked to be set for the very top.

Predictions for England’s 2020 squad from five or 10 years ago proved to be well off. International football, and tournaments by their very nature, are unpredictable.

Looking a year ahead to Euro 2021 Final, there are too many variables to really guess if England will be there.

What we can look at, though, is the current state of the team, the age of the players and the potential for younger players to progress over the next 12 months.

This group of England players, the depth of options that Gareth Southgate has, feels different. They are a cut above anything England have produced before.

Euro 2020 betting favourites or not, the rest of Europe’s footballing powerhouses will be wary of the Three Lions next summer.
